Sweet and Savory Fried Plantains

A delicious recipe for frying plantains, seasoned with garlic, pepper, and sweetened with agave nectar and brown sugar.

Ingredients

  • yellow plantain (1 large)
  • garlic powder (0.125 teaspoon)
  • canola oil (1 tablespoon)
  • reduced-fat margarine (0.5 teaspoon)
  • ground black pepper (0.125 teaspoon)
  • agave nectar (1 teaspoon)
  • light brown sugar (0.333 teaspoon)
  • ground cinnamon (1 pinch)

Instructions

  1. Cut plantain into three sections. Quarter each section so you have twelve pieces. Season plantain pieces with garlic powder.
  2. Heat oil and margarine together in a small skillet over medium heat. Cook plantains in hot oil until lightly browned, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Season with pepper and continue to cook until slightly darker in color, 2 to 3 minutes more.
  3. Remove skillet from heat and drizzle agave syrup over the plantain pieces. Sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon over plantains.
