Punjabi Sukha Urad Dal
A delicious and hearty Indian dish made with black lentils, spices, and garnished with fresh cilantro.
Ingredients
- black lentils (urad dal) (1 cup)
- water (0 )
- vegetable oil (2 tablespoons)
- onion (1 )
- green chile peppers (4 )
- garlic (4 cloves)
- ginger root (1 tablespoon)
- salt (0 )
- tomato (1 )
- garam masala (1 teaspoon)
- ground turmeric (0.5 teaspoon)
- cilantro (0.25 cup)
Instructions
- Place lentils in a large container and cover with several inches of cool water. Let soak for 4 hours or overnight. Drain and rinse.
- Heat oil in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Add onion, chile peppers, garlic, and ginger. Cook until onions are golden brown, about 5 minutes.
- Stir lentils and 1 cup water into onion-chile mixture. Season with salt. Reduce heat to low and simmer until lentils are mostly cooked, about 30 minutes.
- Add tomato, garam masala, and turmeric. Cook until lentils are tender, about 10 minutes more.
- Garnish with cilantro, and serve.
