Natchitoches Meat Pies

A centuries-old Louisiana comfort recipe featuring seasoned meat and dough, shaped like turnovers and fried to perfection.

Ingredients

  • ground beef (1 cup)
  • ground pork (1 cup)
  • onion (1 medium)
  • celery (1 stalk)
  • bell pepper (1 medium)
  • garlic (2 cloves)
  • seasoned salt (1 tsp)
  • black pepper (0.5 tsp)
  • cajun seasoning (2 tsp)
  • dough (1 pack)
  • oil (2 cup)

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, cook the ground beef and ground pork until browned. Drain off excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion, celery, bell pepper, and minced garlic. Sauté until the vegetables are soft.
  3. Season the meat mixture with seasoned salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if desired). Allow to cool slightly.
  4. Cut the dough into circles, about 5 inches in diameter. Place a spoonful of the meat mixture in the center of each circle.
  5. Fold the dough over the filling to create a turnover and press the edges to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges for extra security.
  6. In a deep skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Fry the meat pies for 3-5 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  7. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
