Natchitoches Meat Pies
A centuries-old Louisiana comfort recipe featuring seasoned meat and dough, shaped like turnovers and fried to perfection.
Ingredients
- ground beef (1 cup)
- ground pork (1 cup)
- onion (1 medium)
- celery (1 stalk)
- bell pepper (1 medium)
- garlic (2 cloves)
- seasoned salt (1 tsp)
- black pepper (0.5 tsp)
- cajun seasoning (2 tsp)
- dough (1 pack)
- oil (2 cup)
Instructions
- In a skillet, cook the ground beef and ground pork until browned. Drain off excess fat.
- Add the chopped onion, celery, bell pepper, and minced garlic. Sauté until the vegetables are soft.
- Season the meat mixture with seasoned salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if desired). Allow to cool slightly.
- Cut the dough into circles, about 5 inches in diameter. Place a spoonful of the meat mixture in the center of each circle.
- Fold the dough over the filling to create a turnover and press the edges to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges for extra security.
- In a deep skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Fry the meat pies for 3-5 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
