Juicy Thanksgiving Turkey

A straightforward guide to cook a moist and flavorful Thanksgiving turkey using brining and expert tips.

Ingredients

  • turkey (1 whole)
  • salt (0.022 kg)
  • water (4 liters)
  • sugar (0.1 kg)
  • garlic (1 clove)
  • fresh herbs (3 tbsp)
  • butter (0.227 kg)

Instructions

  1. Prepare a wet brine with water, salt, and sugar (optional).
  2. Submerge the turkey in the brine and refrigerate for 12 to 24 hours.
  3. Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C).
  4. Remove the turkey from the brine, rinse and pat dry.
  5. Mix softened butter with minced garlic and chopped herbs, then rub it under the skin of the turkey.
  6. Place the turkey on a roasting rack and cover with cheesecloth soaked in butter.
  7. Roast in the preheated oven, basting periodically, and increase the temperature towards the end to crisp up the skin.
  8. Utilize a meat thermometer to check that the breast reaches 165°F (75°C) and thigh reaches 175°F (80°C).
  9. Allow the turkey to rest for at least 20 minutes before slicing.
