Elevated Store-Bought Mac and Cheese

A simple way to transform store-bought mac and cheese into a delicious homemade-style dish using a few additional ingredients.

Ingredients

  • nutmeg (1 pinch)
  • butternut squash purée (2 cup)
  • extra-sharp Cheddar (0.5 cup)
  • panko (0.25 cup)
  • butter (1 tablespoon)
  • sage (1 teaspoon)

Instructions

  1. Pour the contents of two packages of store-bought mac and cheese into a large bowl.
  2. Mix in a pinch of nutmeg, 2 cups of butternut squash purée, and 1/2 cup of shredded extra-sharp Cheddar cheese.
  3. Decide to either heat the mixture in the microwave or bake it in the oven until bubbling and golden brown (about 30 to 40 minutes).
  4. For the panko topping, mix 1/4 cup of panko, 1 tablespoon melted butter, and 1 teaspoon chopped sage in a bowl.
  5. Sprinkle the panko mixture over the mac and cheese before baking.
  6. Bake in a 375°F (190°C) oven until bubbling and golden brown.
