Chef John's Sweet Potato Casserole
Sweet potato casserole is the heart of the Thanksgiving table. Creamy, cozy, and spiced to perfection, it's a dish that evokes memories of good times and even better food.
Ingredients
- Sweet potatoes (4 large)
- Butter (3 tbsp)
- Brown sugar (2 tbsp)
- Vanilla extract (1 tsp)
- Cinnamon (0.5 tsp)
- Egg (1 )
- Chopped pecans or nuts (0.5 cup)
- Marshmallows (1 cup)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Peel and chop the sweet potatoes into large chunks. Boil sweet potatoes in a large pot of water until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain well and return to the pot.
- Mash sweet potatoes with a potato masher or fork until coarsely mashed.
- Add melted butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon to the sweet potatoes and mix well.
- Let the mash cool slightly, then stir in the egg until fully combined.
- Transfer mashed sweet potatoes to a greased casserole dish.
- Top with chopped pecans or any other desired topping, and optionally layer marshmallows on top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until heated through and lightly browned.
